At Congaree Elementary School, helping students soar means supporting the whole child — including the little things that can make a big difference in a student’s day.
A Congaree Elementary teacher recently launched a “Take What You Need” Care Station, a welcoming space where students can discreetly access everyday personal-care and comfort items when they need them during the school day.
The idea behind the station is simple: sometimes students need a small item to help them feel comfortable, confident and ready to focus on learning. Rather than allowing an everyday need to become a distraction, the Care Station provides students with an easy and respectful way to find what they need and continue with their day.
More than a collection of supplies, the station reflects Congaree Elementary’s commitment to creating a school environment where every student feels known, supported and cared for.
“The goal is to make these items available without judgement, embarrassment, or stigma, so that students can quietly take what they need and return to their day, feeling comfortable, confident, and ready to learn," said Ms. Wysong, a 4th grade teacher at Congaree. “I believe that this initiative aligns with the kind of classroom and school environment we want to create - one where students feel safe, respected, supported, and cared for."
The “Take What You Need” concept also helps normalize asking for what you need. Students can access the station without having to explain their circumstances or feel singled out, preserving both independence and dignity.
The Care Station has already received support from community partners who helped provide items for its initial launch. Their generosity demonstrates the power of schools and communities working together to create an environment where students can thrive.
As the Care Station becomes an ongoing resource at Congaree Elementary, the school welcomes continued community support to help keep it stocked throughout the year. Individuals, businesses and community organizations interested in contributing may donate new personal-care and everyday comfort items to help sustain the initiative.
Every donation — large or small — helps ensure the station remains ready whenever an Aviator may need it.
The initiative is another example of how Congaree educators and community partners look beyond academics to create meaningful connections with students and build a positive school culture.
At Congaree Elementary, students are encouraged to “Enter to Learn, Depart to Soar!” The “Take What You Need” Care Station serves as one more reminder that sometimes helping an Aviator soar begins with simply making sure they feel confident, comfortable and cared for.
